This CAN be done – I’ve just tested it by copying the contents of the 512Mb card to a 6Gb SDHC card and it runs / installs perfectly well, which is a bonus. Many of you may have a card which is bigger than the 512Mb included, so you’ll no doubt want to copy the content onto your existing card. The software comes with a host of navigation options and settings, plus it’ll try and auto-setup your GPS device so you can get going quickly.ĭelivered by way of a 512Mb data card, this is a simple plug and play installation with 3D maps coupled with of turn-by-turn voice navigation and a simple interface with powerful advanced settings. However, since Garmin appears determined to blow it with their past customers that want Garmin maps on other Android phones, I guess I'm ready to move on.
I shouldn't have to settle for inferior hardware just to get Garmin maps. What's more, it can run pretty good geocaching apps on it which reduces my need to ever replace my 60csx with another Garmin handheld unit. My phone is more powerful, has more memory and has a newer version of Android on it. The bottom line is that the phone I bought is better than the Garminfone, with or without Garmin maps. Anything less will surely doom Garmin's Android software and the Garminfone to failure. The only chance Garmin has at competing in the smart phone space is to grab as much market share as they can by making their Android software available to every Android based phone on the market. Consequently, Garmin doesn't have a chance of beating Google. Most people likely won't pay for something when they are already getting a decent product for free. Every other new Android phone on the market runs the free Google map application that is getting better and better. Garmin is trying to have its Garminfone lock horns with every other Android smart phone on the market with the Garminfone's sales having yet to impress.
Garmin's apparent stance on not releasing a standalone Android app is baffling. So to say that I've liked Garmin products over the years is a huge understatement. I've also owned the XT software for a Touch Pro 2. I've now owned 5 different Garmin GPS units - an Etrex Legend, a GPSmap 60c, a GPSmap 60csx and two XT units.
